SGA TURNS 100!

CELEBRATING A CENTURY OF STUDENT LEADERSHIP

Established in 1923, the Abilene Christian University Student Government Association (SGA) has reached a historic milestone - its 100th year of existence!

For a century, the SGA has been an integral part of the ACU experience, dedicated to serving, engaging, equipping, and empowering students in their pursuit of personal and academic growth. With its roots dating back to a time when flapper dresses and jazz music were all the rage, SGA has evolved, adapted, and persevered through the decades to become a cornerstone of the ACU community.

From its inception, SGA has followed a framework loosely mirroring the principles of the United States government. With a Constitution, Bylaws, and Rules of Order in place, the association maintains a delicate balance of power among its three branches: the Executive, Legislative, and Judicial branches. This structure ensures that SGA can function most effectively, just as the United States government does on a larger scale.

A Preamble that Guides Our Mission

The heart of SGA's mission is beautifully articulated in its constitution's preamble:

"We, the undergraduate student body of Abilene Christian University, in order to provide an atmosphere for students to grow spiritually, academically, and socially, to promote the interests of the student body to the administration of the University, and to engage, equip, and empower the student body, do ordain and establish this Constitution."

This timeless declaration underscores the commitment of SGA to foster holistic growth among students, advocate for their needs, and provide them with the tools to thrive within and beyond the campus community.

A Century of Evolution

Throughout the past century, ACU's campus and SGA have witnessed numerous transformations. In its early days, SGA was known as the Students Association, or SA. As time passed, the abbreviation became more familiar, evolving into the Student Government Association (SGA). Just as the world has changed drastically since 1923, so too has the role of SGA in the lives of ACU students.

For a century, the Abilene Christian University Student Government Association (SGA) has been the guardian of cherished traditions that define the ACU experience. From the enchanting holiday spectacle of Litmas to the commitment of funding all student organizations, SGA's legacy is etched in the hearts of our community. Join Week introduces students to diverse clubs, while Green Week fosters environmental stewardship. The Senate Retreat builds leadership, and the ACU SGA Olympics adds a fresh tradition of friendly competition. As we celebrate 100 years, SGA remains dedicated to nurturing tradition and innovation, shaping the ACU journey for generations to come.

As we celebrate this remarkable milestone, we reflect on the rich history, dedication, and resilience of the ACU Student Government Association. Join us in honoring 100 years of student leadership, community engagement, and a commitment to equipping the next generation of leaders. Together, we look forward to the bright future that awaits as SGA continues to shape the ACU experience for generations to come.
